Inside the systems

Experience behind the fiction

Drawing on more than three decades of experience across technology, cloud architecture, and cybersecurity, Robert approaches speculative fiction from inside the systems his stories examine.

His work explores what happens when the tools humanity creates begin making decisions of their own—and whether people remain capable of controlling the systems built to serve them.

That technical foundation supports the fiction without becoming its subject. The machinery matters because of the choices it creates, the power it concentrates, and the people caught inside it.

Recurring signals

Questions inside the stories

The technology changes. The central question remains: who is making the decision, and who lives with its consequences?

  1. 01

    Human agency

The choices people retain—or surrender—when systems begin acting on their behalf.

  2. 02

    Systems and power

How technology shapes behaviour, concentrates control, and changes the rules around those who depend on it.

  3. 03

    Machine intelligence

Artificial intelligence as a lens on human ambition, fear, responsibility, and survival.

Writing perspective

Technology is never just scenery

Systems influence behaviour, power, and choice long before they become visible to the people living with their consequences. In Robert’s fiction, technology is part of the pressure acting on every character, not decoration behind the plot.

Artificial intelligence becomes most interesting when it reveals something about humans: what they want, what they fear, and what they are willing to hand over for convenience or control.

The aim is always a character-driven story—not a technical manual—with people and their decisions at the centre of the signal.
